I Kina har sedan Shangdynastin (1600-1050) före Kristus funnits en form av dyrkan och hyllning av avlidna släktingar. Det finns belägg för att forntida Kungar höll religiösa ceremonier där de offrade till tidigare Kungar och bad för ledning om framtiden. Med tiden spred sig sedvänjan till hela den Kinesiska kulturen. Det skapades porträtt av de avlidna som placerades på ett altare. Idag placerar man oftast ett foto på den avlidne på ett altare som respekt och för att ge utrymme att sörja den kära avlidne släktingen. Det här är ett par tavlor målade på glas. De målas omvänt rakt på glaset, en gammal teknik. Tavlorna avbildar en Kejsare och hans hustru. De här är en senare avbildning från vad jag tror 1900-talets mitt. Tavlorna är inköpta 2008 i Lijiang, Kina 2008 men köptes i en antikbutik. Glastavlorna är inramade i en träram med ett klassiskt Kinesiskt mässinghänge. De är mycket välgjorda och har endast ett lätt bruksslitage. De mäter 38,5 X 27,5 cm och hänget mäter 3 X 5 cm.
Chinese Ancestral Portraits Painted on Glass
In China, since the Shang Dynasty (1600-1050) BC, there has been a form of worship and tribute to deceased relatives. There is evidence that ancient Kings held religious ceremonies where they offered sacrifices to former Kings and prayed for guidance about the future. Over time, the custom spread to the entire Chinese culture. Portraits of the deceased were created and placed on an altar. Today, a photo of the deceased is usually placed on an altar as a sign of respect and to provide space to mourn the dear deceased relative. This is a pair of paintings painted on glass. They are painted upside down directly on the glass, an old technique. The paintings depict an Emperor and his wife. These are a later depiction from what I believe was the middle of the 20th century. The paintings were purchased in 2008 in Lijiang, China in 2008 but were purchased in an antique shop. The glass panels are framed in a wooden frame with a classic Chinese brass pendant. They are very well made and have only light wear. They measure 38.5 X 27.5 cm and the pendant measures 3 X 5 cm.
